The Musée des Plans-reliefs is a museum of military models, consisting of a collection of some 100 models dating back to 1668. The collection was begun under the Marquis de Louvois, Louis XIV’s minister for war, and it focuses on city fortifications and topographical features such as hills and harbours. Production of the models came to an end in 1870 with the disappearance of fortifications bastionnees. There are currently 28 models on show in Paris, and a further 15 in Lille.
